China Changes Immigration Laws

Immigration laws for foreign nationals visiting or living in China are changing. These laws have not yet been finalised, but early indications are that anyone wishing to stay in the country for more than 180 days will need a residence permit.
Visit or tourist visas will only be extended once by a maximum of 30 days. For anyone interested in moving to China on a more permanent basis, there will be the introduction of several new visa categories, including R visas for highly skilled specialists.
Work visas will be divided into Z1 and Z2, for over and under 90 day stays. Z1 visa holders are likely to need a residence permit too.
Business visitors may be required to apply for a new M category visa instead of an F visa – although the differences between the two have not yet been finalised.
