Lufthansa Upgrades Offering

Lufthansa has upgraded its in-flight services for First and Business Class passengers. The airline has made a move towards better quality, greater variety and fresher food, including pastries “fresh from the baker”, with meals also displaying clearly identifiable ingredients.
There is a larger variety of teas, juices and beers to choose from, too. All flights within Europe offer Business Class passengers a full meal, irrespective of flying time, and anything longer than a 76-minute flight includes a sweet treat to round off the meal.
For passengers with special dietary needs, there is a selection of 18 meals on offer, complying with certain nutritional and religious requirements, including Halaal, Kosher, gluten-free, vegetarian and whole food options, among others. There is also a new range of toiletries in the washrooms.

Lufthansa Takes Delivery of A320 with Sharklets

Lufthansa pilots have picked up the airline’s first Airbus A320 equipped with 2.4 metre-high extended wingtips in Hamburg Finkenwerder. Known as ‘sharklets’, the blended wingtips are designed to cut fuel consumption by one to four percent, depending on the route length, and the equivalent amount of CO2 emissions. They also enable aircraft to climb faster, which has a positive effect on reducing noise emissions. Sharklets were born from lessons taught by nature - large birds such as the crane or condor curl their wingtip feathers upwards in order to save energy when flying. Sharklets similarly reduce lift-induced drag and improve the aerodynamics at the wingtips. Airbus expects the resultant fuel saving to reduce CO2 emissions by around a yearly 1,000 tonnes per aircraft, which is equivalent to the volume of emissions generated by about 200 cars put to average use. A total of 22 brand new A320 jets, and all fitted with this Airbus blended-wing innovation, are scheduled for delivery to Lufthansa by early 2015, as replacements for older aircraft. Since the fuel-saving comes into effect principally at cruising height, Lufthansa traffic managers will deploy the A320’s equipped with sharklets mainly on longer European routes.

Lufthansa Plans Premium Economy

Lufthansa is expanding its product portfolio and will equip the entire Lufthansa long-haul fleet with a Premium Economy. The supervisory board has approved the investment capital for the introductory project to achieve this.
At the beginning of next year, a project group will be formed to manage the introduction and define the precise features of the product, as well as a detailed timetable. Premium Economy will be installed on the entire intercontinental fleet.
This substantially upgraded Economy product will fill the gap between the superior Business Class segment, which features a seat that can be converted into a fully-flat bed on one side, and the classic Economy Class on the other. This will appeal to both leisure travellers seeking additional comfort and business travellers.

Lufthansa Move to Munich

Lufthansa passengers will for the first time be able to reach Cape Town non-stop from Munich, when the upcoming 2012/2013 winter flight schedule comes into effect.
Contrary to the existing winter schedule, the Lufthansa connection to the Cape Town will not be operated from Frankfurt, but instead will depart from the Bavarian capital city effective 28 October 2012.
As the night flight ban in Frankfurt has been restrictively implemented, in the current summer flight schedule Lufthansa has already reduced departures from Frankfurt during evening hours or advanced them to earlier hours.
The evening flight to Cape Town will now be moved from Frankfurt to Munich in the interests of increased flight operation reliability and stability. In the upcoming winter flight schedule, Cape Town will be served from Munich five times a week with an Airbus A340-300.
Passengers who are already booked on the Frankfurt – Cape Town connection will be rebooked at no charge and informed accordingly. The departure times from Munich will change only slightly compared with those of Frankfurt.
